Eye exams are a critical part of early detection and treatment of eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, or diabetic retinopathy. These conditions show few if any symptoms until they've already begun to do damage to your vision and eye health. In these cases, the earlier these conditions can be treated, the more likely your eye doctor will be successful at halting or slowing down the disease and saving your eyesight.

How Often Do Kids and Young Adults need to

Have Eye Exams?

Children should begin having eye exams when they're about 6 months old. The first few eye exams, recommended at 6 months and 3 years, are essential for ensuring that your child's eyes and visual skills are developing properly. If your Lewis Center eye doctor doesn't detect any developmental issues, it's usually alright to wait until right before your child starts school, around 5 years old, for their next eye exam.

Once they begin school, however, they should have an eye exam at least once a year to check their visual acuity and visual skills such as convergence/divergence, visual focus and tracking, and visual processing. All of these are essential for success in the classroom and in extracurricular activities as your child grows. Undiagnosed and untreated issues with your child's vision can cause your child to have an especially hard time at school, and may sour their relationship with learning for many years.

Your child should have an eye exam every school year, at least until they are done with high school.

Our eye doctors at Professional VisionCare will do a thorough check of your vision to make sure your glasses or contact lenses are still providing you with your clearest vision.

You'll be asked to read from a basic eye chart, which tests your eyesight at various distances. We'll also check carefully for conditions such as astigmatism, nearsightedness, and farsightedness, which can severely harm the clarity of your vision. This procedure involves having you look through a series of lenses, and you'll need to give feedback on which ones give the clearest vision. With the aid of a retinoscope, we'll measure how light focuses on your retina with each of the different lenses.

These tests, among others, provide us with the information needed to check your eye health and issue an accurate prescription.
